The freelance writer’s lifestyle is one that is envied by many. However, all that glitters may not be gold. The lifestyle of a freelance writer may not be for you. Most people choose to become freelance writers because they have a passion for writing. You don’t necessarily need a degree in journalism, creative writing, English, or literature. Some freelance writers have these degrees, but others are natural born writers.

The pluses

As a freelance writer, you get to choose whether or not you work from a home office or regular office. Most writers work from home because of the benefits such as wearing what you want, making your own hours, and commuting only a few feet each day.

Freelance writers have many writing opportunities to choose from such as writing web copy, blog posts, articles, advertising copy, short or long sales copy, or newsletters. You can also write eBooks, screenplays, guidebooks, fiction, and non-fiction. There’s always something to write.

The minuses

As a freelance writer you are responsible for every aspect of your business. This includes, but is not limited to writing, editing, marketing, and networking. Being a freelance writer takes dedication, perseverance, and determination. If you’re not disciplined enough to handle the business aspect, freelance writing may not be for you.

Many freelance writers work a day job to supplement their writing income. Your income will grow as your writing skills improve and you can show samples of published work.
